Luxury Fashion Models as Glorified Saints in Contemporary Icon Paintings

Saint Ungaro of Paris

Montreal Artist, Kevin Ledo, presents new works at Vancouver’s Ayden Gallery in the exhibition “A Configuration of Posture, Pose and Purpose”.  The group exhibition is a collection of predominantly delicate, feminine figures. Other artists include Mandy Tsung, Ben Tour, Jordan Bent, Carla Dearman, Eve Duhamel, Kristian Adam, Kay Zigmont.

Presented in this exhibition by Ledo will be paintings from the series entitled “The Guiding Light.” The works draw parallels between medieval Christian icon paintings and the contemporary icons of fashion advertisements. Ledo states: “Having been raised Catholic, educated as a commercial artist and presently far from either, my artistic practice as a painter is centered on persuasive content and imagery in religion and commercialism. My research aims to explore the phenomenon that is the manipulation of truth by rampant consumer driven institutions and how it’s comparable to the religious authorities during the pre-age of enlightenment. Both institutions have constructed their own truths and manipulated them to their own self serving ends. My work draws parallels between their tactics of persuasion such as icon worship and the influential notions that allude to or state that people are inadequate, impure or incomplete and can reach fulfillment by following a prescribed doctrine.”

“A Configuration of Posture, Pose and Purpose” will open on Friday, September 19th, 2009, at 19:00 until 23:00, at Ayden Gallery, 88 West Pender Street (Tinseltown), Vancouver, BC.

Kevin Ledo is native to and based in Montreal. His paintings often flirt in prevalent persuasive imagery. Also presented by Ledo in the exhibition are select paintings from the “Desire” series which celebrate and scrutinize persuasive content and imagery found mass media.
